Caring and Comfortable Pediatric Dentistry

Going to the dentist should be fun and enjoyable, something children look forward to — not something about which to be frightened, but still many children are. The dentist office is a new place, and an unfamiliar one. But at Smilez Pediatric Dental Group Loudoun, we strive to make even our littlest patients feel comfortable and at ease from the moment they walk through the door. With the use of simple language, our staff of hygienists and dentists will explain the process and the importance of maintaining proper oral health practices, because our number one commitment is to providing your child a level of treatment and care that is second to none.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends:

…that all children see a dentist for the first time no later than their first birthday. The general recommendation is within six months after the eruption of the first tooth, which can happen between 6 and 12 months of age (or earlier). It is never too early to start preventative dental care to maintain optimal oral health.

Did you know?

As your child’s baby teeth continue to appear (until age three), his gums may be sore or tender, and there are ways you can alleviate this discomfort: Rub a cool cloth over his gums or provide a teething toy or frozen breastmilk to help.

Permanent teeth begin to erupt at age 6, and continue until 21.

By the time a child reaches adulthood, he will have 32 permanent teeth.

Children should have dental checkups and cleanings every six months. Additionally, fluoride treatments given semi-annually can help strengthen his teeth. Children under two, however, should not use fluoride-based toothpaste unless under the specific recommendation of a dentist.

As a parent, you should check your child’s teeth every two weeks to check for signs of decay.

Sealants are often recommended for children because they protect the deep grooves in the biting surface of the teeth.
