A pulpotomy is commonly referred to as a “baby root canal,” although it is a simpler procedure. It is performed when decay or trauma reaches the inner pulp chamber of a primary tooth, but the roots remain healthy.

The pulp contains nerves and blood vessels that keep the tooth alive. If bacteria enter this area, it can result in pain, infection, or swelling. A pulpotomy removes the damaged or infected pulp from the crown portion of the tooth while leaving the healthy root pulp untouched. This approach allows us to:

How a Pulpotomy Is Performed

Careful Removal of Decay – The dentist removes the decayed portion of the tooth and carefully accesses the pulp chamber.
Cleaning the Inside of the Tooth – Only the affected pulp tissue within the crown is removed, leaving healthy root tissue in place.
Placement of a Medicament – A special therapeutic material is placed to soothe the remaining pulp and prevent further infection.
Protective Restoration – To strengthen and protect the tooth, we usually recommend a stainless steel crown. In some cases, a tooth colored restoration may be used depending on the location and needs of the tooth.
